WHAT'S ON THE CDL PERMIT TEST?
The CDL permit test is a written knowledge test taken in person at the state DMV. Every driver seeking a Class A CDL must take the CDL permit test. Class A applicants also take the Combination Vehicles test, and drivers training in trucks with air brakes take the Air Brakes test. Applicants must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly on each test to pass.

CDL PERMIT TEST FAQ
Can I take a free practice test before I get my Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)?
Yes. TransTech’s free app has practice tests for North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, and students can download it now to start preparing.
What’s the Passing Score for a CDL Permit Test?
Applicants must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly on each part of the CDL permit test. On the 50-question General Knowledge test, that means at least 40 correct answers.
How long does a CLP last?
A CLP is valid from 180 days to a full year, depending on which state issued the CLP. Some states have options to renew the CLP upon expiration; drivers should check their state’s rules before taking their CLP knowledge tests.
Can a person take the CDL permit test online?
No. The CDL permit test is taken in person at the state DMV, but students can practice online and in the app before test day.
Are the questions in the app the same as the real test?
No. The real test questions aren’t public, but the app’s questions are based on each state’s official CDL manual, which the real test also uses.
How old does a person need to be to get a CLP?
A person must be at least 18 years old to get a CLP. Drivers must be 21 or older to haul freight across state lines. See the exact rules for North Carolina Permit, South Carolina Permit, and Georgia Permit.
What should a student bring to the DMV for the permit test?
Most DMVs ask for a valid driver’s license, proof of identity and residency, a Social Security number, and a DOT medical card. Each state’s CDL requirements page lists the exact documents. See North Carolina documents, South Carolina documents, or Georgia documents.
What happens if a student fails the CDL permit test?
Most states let applicants retake the test, but some require a waiting period or a new fee. Students should check with their state DMV for retake rules.
How long after getting a CLP can a student take the CDL skills test?
Federal rules require students to hold a CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test. Most students use that time for behind-the-wheel training.
